Discover the EYFS framework at Asia Pacific Schools

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a play-based framework that provides a world-class standard for children aged 2 to 5 years old.

It focuses on building literacy and essential #SkillsForLife during a child’s most critical formative years.

The curriculum covers seven key areas of learning and development, ensuring that every child builds a strong physical, social, and academic foundation.

To see why this play-based approach is so powerful, watch the TED Talk by Molly Wright on how “serve and return” interaction shapes a child’s brain.

The EYFS Framework

What is the EYFS Framework? Think of it as a vibrant roadmap for the most important early years of a child’s learning journey.

The focus shifts from simple age-related milestones to the Characteristics of Effective Learning—emphasising how children engage with the world through play, active exploration, and critical thinking.

Ultimately, it’s a promise that early education should nurture a child’s natural curiosity while preparing them for the classroom.

What Are the Seven Areas of Learning?

Learning with curiosity and growing with confidence, the EYFS focuses on the areas below.

The Prime Areas: Building the Foundation

  • Physical Development: Building healthy bodies and active minds through movement, coordination, and healthy habits.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Developing self-awareness, emotional control, and positive relationships through group play and storytelling.
  • Communication and Language: Supporting self-expression by helping children speak clearly, listen attentively, and respond meaningfully through songs and rhymes.

The Specific Areas: Essential Knowledge

  • Literacy and English: Strengthening reading and writing through phonics and storytelling, helping children build vocabulary and confidence.
  • Mathematics: Making numbers engaging through puzzles and real-life problem solving, including counting, patterns, and shapes.
  • Understanding the World: Encouraging curiosity about people, places, and technology in the surrounding environment.
  • Expressive Arts and Design: Inspiring creativity through art, music, movement, and role-play.

EYFS Also Means “Effective Learning”

Effective learning goes beyond academic achievement—it focuses on how children learn.

At Asia Pacific Schools, we create a classroom environment built on “Good Struggles,” where children are active participants rather than passive learners.

This approach helps children build resilience, develop curiosity, and gain the confidence to overcome challenges.

Our learners develop the ability to ask “Why,” persevere through difficulties, and build critical thinking skills that support their long-term learning journey.

At Asia Pacific Schools, we ensure that learning spaces are dynamic, engaging, and supportive.

  • Emotional Safety: A nurturing atmosphere where children feel confident to explore and make mistakes.
  • Accessible Resources: High-quality play areas where tools for learning are always within reach.
  • Outdoor Exploration: Natural and varied outdoor spaces in Subang that encourage physical activity and discovery.
  • Partnership with Parents: A strong collaboration between school and home to support each child’s development.

Early Learning Goals and Their Importance

By combining the seven areas of learning with the right environment, the EYFS framework naturally builds toward the Early Learning Goals (ELGs).

These are not just milestones—they are meaningful markers that support each child’s full potential.

When literacy, physical development, and social confidence come together, children develop true school readiness that goes beyond academics.

Whether continuing with the Malaysian National Curriculum or an international pathway, EYFS learners gain the resilience and curiosity needed to thrive.

At Asia Pacific Schools, we ensure a smooth transition into Primary school and beyond.
