What is the EYFS?

Discover the EYFS framework at Asia Pacific Schools

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a play-based framework that provides a world-class standard for children aged 2 to 5 years old.

It focuses on building literacy and essential #SkillsForLife during a child’s most critical formative years.

The curriculum covers 7 key areas of learning and development, ensuring that every child builds a strong physical, social, and academic foundation.

To see why this play-based approach is so powerful, watch this incredible TED Talk by Molly Wright on how “serve and return” interaction shapes a child’s brain.

The EYFS Framework

What is the EYFS Framework, you may ask? Well, think of it as a vibrant roadmap for the most critical foundation years of a child’s learning journey.

The focus here shifts from simple age-related milestones to Characteristics of Effective Learning - emphasizing how children engage with the world through play, active exploration, and critical thinking (something we’ll dive deeper into later!).

Ultimately, it’s a promise that early education should be as much about nurturing a child’s natural curiosity as it is about preparing them for the classroom.

You can read the full EYFS Statutory Framework here.

What are the Seven Areas of Learning

Learning with curiosity and growing with confidence, the EYFS focuses on the areas below.

The Prime Areas: Building the Foundation

Physical Development: Building healthy bodies and active minds! From coordination in creative dance to understanding healthy habits at home.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Growing self-awareness and lasting bonds.

We help learners manage emotions and build positive relationships through group play and storytelling.

Communication and Language: Supporting self-expression. We guide children to speak clearly, listen attentively, and respond meaningfully through songs and rhymes.

The Specific AreasEssential Knowledge

Literacy and English: Strengthening reading and writing to open up a world of imagination. Our daily phonics and storytelling help children form words and build a rich vocabulary in a global language.

Mathematics: Making numbers fun! Through puzzles and real-life problem solving, children learn to count, recognise patterns, and explore shapes.

Understanding the World: Nurturing curiosity about the physical surroundings and the community. We explore people, places, and technology together.

Expressive Arts and Design: Inspiring boundless creativity. Children share their thoughts and feelings through art, music, movement, and role-play.

EYFS also Means “Effective Learning”

What do we mean by Effective Learning? At Asia Pacific Schools, it is defined by more than just hitting academic targets; it is about mastering the ‘How’ behind the knowledge.

We transform the classroom into a space of “Good Struggles.” This approach ensures that children aren’t just passive recipients of information, but active participants who build resilience by stepping beyond their comfort zones.

This way our curious learners in Early Years develop the curiosity to ask “Why,” the confidence to persevere through challenges, and the critical thinking skills needed to lead their own Amazing Learning journey ahead.

Environments Which Enable Full Growth

An “Enabling Environment” is the secret ingredient that turns a classroom into a world of discovery. At Asia Pacific Schools, we believe that for learning to be truly effective, the surroundings must be as dynamic as the children themselves.

This starts with Emotional Safety; our teachers create a warm, nurturing atmosphere where every child feels confident enough to make mistakes – the first step toward any #GoodStruggle.

We’ve fully integrated the EYFS principle by providing High-Quality play areas filled with Accessible resources, ensuring that tools for building, writing, or creating are always within a child’s reach.

Our Natural and varied outdoor spaces on campus in Subang offer a breath of fresh air, literally and academically, allowing curious learners to explore the environment through messy play and physical challenge.

Finally, we know that a child’s environment extends beyond the classroom. By fostering a strong Partnership with parents, we ensure that the support system around every student is consistent, encouraging, and geared toward their unique growth.

Early Learning Goals and Their Importance for Children

By combining the 7 areas of learning with the right environment, the EYFS curriculum naturally builds toward the Early Learning Goals (ELGs).

These goals aren’t just a checklist; they are calibrated milestones that motivate young learners to fulfil their full potential.

When these foundational pieces come together—literacy, physical health, and social confidence—it creates a “school-readiness” that goes beyond academics.

Whether you are considering the Malaysian National Curriculum or an International pathway, children who have experienced the EYFS have the resilience and curiosity to thrive in any environment.

At Asia Pacific Schools, we ensure this transition is seamless, leaving our curious learners fully prepared for the exciting “step up” into Primary school and beyond.
